Depending on my schedule and mood, I can choose to receive DVDs by mail, or watch many great movies and TV series through their instant streaming. Netflix is a hugely popular DVD rental company in the U.S., well-known for its value-for-money online subscription service. By offering a new customers a free Netflix trial, they are hoping those who sign up for the trial will end up being a customer. With over 23 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, they are proving themselves to be ahead of the competition. In fact, they have added 3.3 million customers in just the first 3 months of 2011. While subscribers are dropping over at Comcast (CMCSA), Netflix is becoming increasingly popular.

Netflix gives you access to thousands of movies through DVD rentals and instant watching. Here's how Netflix works: For just $7.99 a month, you can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streaming over the Internet to your computer, TV or internet connected Blu-ray players, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, Apple iPhone or iPad

To receive DVDs by mail, plans start from as low as $9.99 per month

For mail rental, the next DVD on your queue will be mailed once you return a DVD

Watch your DVD for as long as you like, with no late fees

Shipping is included both ways

I would say that the web streaming aspect of Netflix is a winning point for me. For a low cost, there's no limit on how many shows you can watch. Why spend more money on a DVD when you can watch it digitally at a much lower cost? As for its cons, Netflix doesn't have too many. If you want to watch shows or movies through instant streaming, you should have decent Internet speed, otherwise it would affect the quality of what you are watching. Also, if you rent their DVDs by mail, there's a turnaround time of around 3 days - 1 day to return it, 1 day for Netflix to process it, and 1 day for it to be mailed to you.

Also, since Netflix isn't cable TV, its "new" shows aren't really that brand new. Two pay TV services, Starz and Showtime, have both announced that Netflix subscribers will no longer be able to watch any of the series that are first running on cable, such as "Californication" and "Dexter" after the current deal ends this summer. But to Netflix's credit, they have managed to up the ante. Netflix said early this month that it had acquired streaming rights to "Mad Men", a very popular series showing on cable channel AMC. It had also acquired the rights to "House of Cards", a new series starring actor Kevin Spacey, even before it shows on any cable channel.

If Netflix continues to improve on its offerings and to go after shows not yet seen on cable, I'm sure this is just the beginning of greater things to come from Netflix.

If you like to be entertained, consider getting a credit card that rewards you for your entertainment purchases. Here are some of my favorite rewards cards. How We Rate Credit Cards Almost one out of three people who use a free trial to try out a streaming video service end up subscribing, researcher Parks Associates said Monday.

That "sizeable portion" of trial users dwarfs the amount of people who abuse free try-outs, Parks senior analyst Glenn Hower said. There is a potential for free trial abuse, but only roughly 1 percent of consumers are 'serial trialers,'" he said. "Most consumers use trials for their intended purpose of trying out a service before deciding whether or not to continue as a paid subscriber."

Services, such as Hulu, Netflix and live-TV streamers like Sling TV, often offer a free period, one of the consumer-friendly patterns that have become standard for online video competitors -- and have made it easier for people get a sense of life as a cord-cutter. Traditional TV providers like cable and satellite have grappled with dwindling customer growth as more people opt for online alternatives.

The data was released Monday as part of Parks' OTT Video Market Tracker, ahead of a presentation at the NAB Show trade show in Las Vegas. According to Parks, Free Netflix more than a fourth of US broadband households tried out at least one online video service in the last six months with a free trial. Of these, 47 percent subscribed to at least one trial service after the free period expired. Most households build their services around at least one of the top three services: Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, according to Parks. Those three also have some of the most effective rates of converting free users to paid.
